What is continence and pelvic floor physiotherapy?

It is a special interest area of physiotherapy aiming to improve bladder, bowel and reproductive health and related pelvic floor muscle control.

Who might benefit from this service?

Men, women or children with any one or combination of the following symptoms

  • Needing to rush to the toilet, difficulty "holding on"
  • Having to go frequently
  • Involuntary loss of urine( even just a few drops) or bowel contents
  • Bedwetting
  • Difficulty controlling wind
  • Feelings of incomplete emptying of bladder or bowel
  • Pain with emptying bladder or bowel
  • Poor flow or straining to empty bladder or bowel
  • Prolapse; which may cause a noticeable bulge in the perineal area or feelings of heaviness, dragging, discomfort or pain in low back, low abdomen, pelvic floor or groin
  • Pain using tampons or with arousal or sexual intercourse - feelings of burning, rawness or deep pain
  • Pre and postnatal pelvic floor weakness or pain problems
  • Difficulty regaining control after surgery for bladder, bowel or gynaecological conditions

What's involved in a consultation?

Respect, confidentiality and professionalism, especially in consideration of the intimate nature of this area of the body

Thorough assessment and explanation within a private and relaxed environment. A typical first session would be 1 hour in order to allow time for questions and to gain an accurate diagnosis.

Encouragement of questions for mutual understanding and co operation in planning and progressing your treatment

Your consent for treatment.

Treatment may involve specific home exercises, manual therapy, bladder or bowel retraining, dietary advice, skin care and product suggestions, education regarding test procedures or surgery preparation and recovery advice.

On occassion, clarification may be needed from your Doctor or referral to another health practitioner may be recommended eg dietician or counsellor.

All of this may require anything from one consultation to several consultations depending on the complexity of the problem(s).

Rebates can be claimed from your private health fund.
Check with your Doctor if you are eligible for the Enhanced Primary Care ( EPC) medicare rebate scheme.

Janelle is passionate about empowering others in all things pelvic floor!

Janelle Angel

Janelle Angel is a physiotherapist of over 30 years experience. She has completed postgraduate studies in the area of continence and pelvic floor rehabilitation. In 2010 Janelle was awarded the title of Continence and Womens' Health Physiotherapist by the Australian Physiotherapy Association in recognition of her experience and training.

Janelle has advanced expertise in the assessment and management of continence (bladder and bowel) problems, prolapse, retraining of the pelvic floor muscles, pelvic and sexual pain problems, preparation for and recovery from childbirth and continence related surgery.

Her work is influenced by her background as a yoga teacher. She has also trained in craniosacral and massage therapies as well as various other eastern and western alternative healing modalities.
